Label Design Hints for Better Printing

Creating a great label starts with smart design choices.

VINGO will not alter your design/artwork files. How your artwork is built affects printability. Here are some tips to make sure your labels or stickers look their best when printed:

Start with High-Resolution Artwork

Use vector files, such as AI, .EPS, or .PDF whenever possible. If you're using images, such as JPG, PNG, TIFF, make sure they're at least 300 PPI (pixels per inch) to avoid blurriness.

Keep Text Readable

Avoid tiny fonts. As a general rule, keep text at least 6 points or larger, and make sure there's good contrast between your text and background. Contrasting colors will help the readability of the text.

Use a Safe Zone

Keep important elements (like logos and text) at least 1/8" inside the edges. This prevents them from getting trimmed off during cutting.

Watch Your Bleed Area

Extend your background colors or images at least 1/8" past the edge of the label size. This “bleed” ensures clean, edge-to-edge printing with no white borders.

Choose Colors Wisely

VINGO prints all designs in CMYK (4-color process). Your labels will print based on how the CMYK values are built in your artwork. Remember that electronic devices such as cell phones and computer screens are RGB (light-based), but printing is CMYK (ink-based).

Bright neon colors or very dark tones may look different when printed. Oranges and purples may not print as vibrant.

Consider What Your Label or Sticker Is Adhering To

If choosing a clear BOPP, be sure the colors in your artwork will be seen and readable when printed especially if you’re applying to a dark container or the contents in the container is dark.

If applying labels to bottles be sure your label size does not exceed the designated area of the label panel. The label panel is a flat area on the body of a bottle where the label is applied. If your label is too large for the label panel, it may lift (flag) from the bottle. This is not a label defect.

Think About Shape

Custom cut shapes can make your labels stand out. Be sure your design lays out well within the shape.

Consider the Material

Uncoated, coated, clear, or metalized — your material choice affects how your design appears in print.

For example, your artwork will need a white layer if printing on Metalized or Clear BOPPs to keep your colors from being dull or washed out. (Refer to our White Ink Layer Information)

Simplify When You Can

A clean, bold design often stands out better than one that's overly detailed, especially at smaller sizes.

What should I know about print quality and file resolution?

We print at high-resolution commercial quality — 800 DPI (dots per inch) — to make sure your labels or stickers look crisp, clear, and professional.

When you upload your artwork, it’s important that your files are at least 300 PPI (pixels per inch) at print size. This ensures your text, images, and designs stay sharp when printed.

There’s no need to send files at extremely high resolutions, such as 600 PPI or higher. Oversized files can slow down processing without improving print quality.

FYI — Don’t be misled — just because a printer claims 1200 DPI doesn’t mean it delivers high quality results. What truly matters is the quality of the equipment, its capabilities, and the expertise of the printer behind it.

VINGO utilizes the best print equipment coupled with highly skilled print specialists to achieve exceptional print.
